Core Aeration

Core aeration is one of the most important factors when considering your lawn’s health. It reduces soil compaction and increases air, water, and nutrients to the roots of all turf grasses.

Soil Compaction:

Compacted soil reduces the ability of roots to expand and absorb nutrients. The “coring” operation pulls half inch diameter cores or plugs of soil from the earth and deposits them on the lawn surface. These cores quickly break down (approximately 1-2 weeks), and the holes made by the aerating machine gradually fill in. This process allows 2 to 3 inches of topsoil to be loosened so that roots can grow out and deep. Thatch and debris that line the surface of your lawn, which hinders fertilizer intake and weed control, are partially broken down in the plug deterioration process.

Increase of air, water, and nutrients:

When water and nutrients are located near the surface of your lawn, grass roots grow upwards to reach this nutrition. This condition makes the roots susceptible to dramatic weather changes such as heat, cold, wind, and foot traffic. Roots become stressed and weak. Core aeration allows water and nutrients to penetrate the soil, providing a deeper and broader root system. Unlike spike aeration, which only pokes holes in the lawn without removing the cores, core aeration allows for the absorption of more nutrition. This process produces a thicker and healthier lawn.

Over time your soil can become compacted and your lawn choked with a layer of thatch and debris. So even if your grass looks thick and green, core aeration every season as a preventive measure can insure the future health of your lawn.
